‘Worse than Graham Taylor’ — the epitaph for Steve McClaren | Euro 2008 - Times Online
It is well documented on the blog my contempt for Steve McClaren. Indeed my last post vainly hoped that even he wouldn’t cock up the chance we’d been given to qualify and that hope did turn out to be in vain.
Simon Barnes’ article is an excellent assessment of McClaren’s reign. McClaren’s quest for popularity forced him to make some nonsensical decisions (especially dropping Beckham) and I always thought Venables was, as Barnes says, ” busted flush”.
Us football lovers are now all wringing our hands at what can be done. There’s a lot of talk about changing the game from the roots up but I think the answer is simple; get a good manager not some coaching manual yes man like McClaren. Someone who can fire up what, despite what lots of people are saying, are a great set of players. Look at how a couple of Croatian players are quite rightly giving it the biggun. It just shows what it meant to them to play for their country and to beat us. We need a motivator who can instill that belief in our players.
You can’t tell me someone can’t make a good team out of the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, the Coles, Owen, Beckham, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and the rest. We’ve got good youngsters such as Walcott and Agbonlahor coming through so we just need a good man to tie it all together, make the right decisons both tactically and in team selection and we’d be there.
