My fiver’s worth

In a blatant rip-off of Tony Cascarino’s Fiver column in the Times, here’s my fiver’s worth about golf.

A good news golf story

Clarke claims dramatic Asian win

It’s great to see Darren Clarke winning again. Sinking a great 25 foot putt at the last he pipped Robert-Jan Derksen to win the Asian Open. You can only imagine what he’s been through the last couple of years and by his own admission it affected the last few holes of his round.

Slow play

As a quick player, nothing mucks my game up more than slow play. The pros have got a lot to answer for. Over five hours for a two ball in the Master recently was unbelievable.

Here’s an interesting quote from Peter Dawson of the R&A:

Some of the times taken at recent high-profile events have, frankly, been unacceptable. It does filter down through the game to grass roots and it has an effect on participation.

It seems the R&A are going to try and do something about it at the Open but the pros need to look at themselves first. A prime example being Jim Furyk and his putting routine.

Ochoa syndrome

Sorenstam beats Creamer for title

Just like in the men’s game when Woods doesn’t play, when Ochoa doesn’t play everyone else gets a chance. Sorenstam has been the best women player for a long time now but new kid on the block Ochoa seems to be able to win tournaments at will.

Square drivers

Call me old fashioned but I think the new square shaped drivers look too freakish to use. I like the look of the new Ping G10 driver.

Why football is the greatest game

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Man Utd | Ferguson heaps praise on Scholes

As Frank Rijkaard says, the laws of the game state that the team who scores the most goals wins and Utd always looked like they were the more purposeful side even though Barca had the lion’s share of the game.

Paul Scholes has been the best midfield player in the Premier League in the last ten years or so. It’s a shame he refuses to play for England.

We need some Luka’s aid

Premier League: Poyet on Modric signing - Setanta Sports

Although we were in dire need of a decent defender and got one in Woodgate, we also needed a creative midfield player as sometimes we’ve looked a little wooden in midfield. I vaguely remember him from the England v Croatia game but I was so wound up about how England were playing his performance sort of passed me by.
